The European Green Deal: Impact and Opportunities for Costa Rica's Agro-industry

Abstract

The aim of this article is to raise awareness about the implications of implementing the new regulations proposed by the European Union, the new trends in international trade, and the environmental policy outlined in the European Green Deal, created in response to environmental concerns and commitments made to minimize these impacts. In 2023, co-creation seminars and workshops were held, during which challenges and concerns related to adapting and implementing the European Green Deal regulations and their implications for the agri-food sector were discussed. These included the loss of competitiveness of agricultural products in the European market, the excessive and dependent use of pesticides in crops, the lack of government controls, and the shortage of financial resources for implementation. The study delves into each of these issues and proposes potential solutions in the form of projects or institutional policies that can be implemented by national entities to support the business sector, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
