Abstract

Our country has few detailed studies on the domestication of forest species, and the existing data are generally monographic, lacking depth in exploring the genetic variability of each species. These studies are time-consuming due to the long lifespans and large size of these species, making genetic improvement complicated compared to agricultural crops, which also yield economic returns in a short time. However, incentives for forestry production are currently being revived, partly because our country is classified as having forestry potential based on biophysical criteria and land use potential (Cuéllar et al., 2003; Republic of El Salvador, 2004). Furthermore, the coffee price crisis has led producers to diversify their crops, making forestry production a highly profitable option.
