A BLOW TO MEMORY: THE TEACHING OF HISTORY IN THE SALVADORAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

How much time does the school dedicate to teaching History? The answer to this question evokes a simple relationship: Its teaching is as important to the school as it is to society. This article presents an overview of the situation regarding History teaching in Salvadoran classrooms, as well as its presence in the curriculum. A small sample is sufficient to confirm the everyday experience: Its presence is almost imperceptible in the education of Salvadorans. The study considered both the analysis of the Salvadoran curriculum and the application of known data collection techniques, which were applied in public and private schools. The main results obtained from the study are the following:
Participatory methodologies are the most used for developing History content.
For students, the most suitable activities for learning History are those where the teacher remains at the center of the activity.
There is no significant methodological difference in the approach to teaching History between public and private schools, although the latter believe that the use of technology should be greater in the educational process.
History occupies a minimal part of the curriculum in primary and secondary education.
