Comparison between the pedagogies used in traditional teaching and competency-based training

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the differences between the traditional pedagogies and the one based on competencies, with long majors and the technical ones at Universidad Catolica de El Salvador. Both models of teaching provided results that reflect the perception from the students towards those models.

In particular, it was sought the critical analysis upon the challenges, difficulties and achievements reached by the students, considering the different strategies that each pedagogical model uses.

The research provided important information related to learning, capacity of immersion in the labor field, the professional competencies that are achieved in each model of study and the methodological preferences each student perceives, according to their personal experiences in the classrooms. At the same time, this research provided information on how the teacher’s role is perceived and what the students think of the traditional methodology and the methodology based on competences. Also, the data gathered data allowed to know the technical capacity, and the experience that the students have in both teaching models in order to join the labor field immediately.
