Historical Background of the Emergence of Universities

Abstract

This research develops a historical approach to the concept of the University, which concentrates on the Cathedral Schools or also known as episcopal schools. Somehow, they created the basis to emerge for the first universities in the late Middle Age.

The purpose was to specify a study about the natural identity of the academic organization (Universitas), and to set an authentic meaning to the academic freedom considered inseparable paramount elements of the university life. Currently this authentic meaning is recognized as a constitutional right.

The academic freedom in the Middle Age (XI-XV centuries) constituted for the university specific features in the fulfilling of its mission. Undoubtedly it was the moment when the university was founded, legitimized its constitutionality. Its autonomy turn the university into a transcendental value as an academic organization.
