Earth-Based Paint Production for the Protection of Adobe Walls Using Soils from Western El Salvador

Abstract

This research was carried out with the purpose of experimenting with colored soils which, when mixed with lime and polyvinyl acetate, produce various shades of environmentally friendly and low-cost paints. The soils used in this research were clayey soils, a type of soil that is highly abundant in the country and can be easily and freely obtained by people from low-income communities. The paints aim to provide, through a variety of colors, a harmonious, pleasant, and healthy appearance for all types of housing, especially adobe houses.

The Catholic University of El Salvador maintains an environmental commitment to our planet. It is essential to raise awareness among students about the need to use natural paints, which can be applied to all types of walls. Therefore, it is necessary to encourage the self-production of paints that are more affordable and less harmful.
