Chronic Kidney Disease, Arterial Hypertension, and Diabetes in a Rural Area of El Salvador

Abstract

Chronic non-communicable diseases are long-term conditions characterized by a generally slow progression. More than nine million deaths attributable to non-communicable diseases occur in people under sixty years of age. These diseases are largely preventable through effective interventions aimed at addressing risk factors. This study established the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases among individuals aged 20 to 60 years in the hamlet of El Tamarindo, located in El Jute canton, Texistepeque municipality, Santa Ana department, during the period from November 2016 to May 2017.

This descriptive, prospective, and non-probabilistic study included a sample of 129 individuals (57 men and 72 women). Variables analyzed included age, sex, symptomatology, exposure to toxic agents, previous medical history, blood glucose levels, blood pressure values, creatinine levels, and glomerular filtration rate. The overall prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases in the sample was 33%. Twenty-six new cases of chronic kidney disease were diagnosed, representing a prevalence of 20%, followed by arterial hypertension with a prevalence of 20%, and diabetes mellitus with a prevalence of 2.3%.
