Incorporation of 3D Printing Technology into Engineering and Architecture Programs at the Catholic University of El Salvador

3D printing is classified as one of the so-called emerging technologies, which are still in development and have a high potential to impact people’s lives, similar to the invention of television, the personal computer, and the internet. This type of printing makes it possible to materialize digitally designed three-dimensional models into physical objects using specialized software. Printers that use this technology have different applications across various sectors of the global economy; therefore, it is necessary to train professionals, especially in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), with competencies in 3D design and printing.
During the research, appropriate courses were identified to incorporate 3D printing applications, generating a sample of possible implementations. Likewise, the results of a demand study for 3D design and printing services were presented, as well as how these services could be implemented within the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.
