Computer-Based Practice and English Language Learning

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to develop computer-based reading and listening practice activities for students enrolled in Intermediate English I of the Bachelor of Education with a Specialization in English Language at the Catholic University of El Salvador, Multidisciplinary Faculty of Ilobasco, Cabañas. The purpose was to strengthen their vocabulary comprehension, reading, and listening skills in order to improve their performance on the standardized TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) examination.

The population of Intermediate English I students was divided into two groups: a control group and an intervention group. For the intervention group, a reading text and an audio recording were presented weekly. Based on these materials, twelve-question tests focused on reading and listening comprehension were developed with varying levels of difficulty. As a result, 60% of the students who participated in the practice activities achieved scores ranging from 280 to 500 points on the standardized TOEIC test.
