Changes in Nursing Education in El Salvador Following the 1994 Educational Reform

Abstract

This article aims to identify the curricular, ontological, scientific, and psychopedagogical changes in nursing education in El Salvador resulting from the 1994 Educational Reform, and thereby establish the advantages of the current educational model. Qualitative methodologies, instruments, techniques, and methods such as hermeneutics for the interpretation of data and texts, together with symbolic interpretation, were applied. Data triangulation and the Weft QDA 1.0.1 software were also used for data categorization.

The results of the study revealed a standardized educational program and a professional image that transcends a stigma of comprehensiveness, demonstrating that the priorities of nursing education in a globalized society are maintaining the professional image, values, and a self-critical professionalism that allows progression from a traditional care-based model to a more advanced one, as well as a facilitative learning model that enables a digital generation to build the most beneficial learning experiences possible. In conclusion, specialized training in the scientific field of Nursing and a new educational model aligned with social changes are proposed.
