Abstract

Family counseling as a systemic, holistic, and multidimensional transformation process emerges in a society immersed in conflict, uncertainty, and complexity as a strategic alternative to intervene in and prevent problems that hinder comprehensive human development and family well-being. Therefore, the need to guide families in discovering and assuming their role is emphasized as a requirement for facing emerging everyday difficulties with confidence and autonomy.

This implies integrating communication and symmetrical dialogue, defining behavioral rules, and fostering co-responsibility, commitment, and discipline to address the challenges of healthy, respectful, and balanced coexistence. In response to these needs, this article presents a documentary review that proposes a comprehensive definition of family counseling, outlining its purposes and possible strategies to generate support and assistance relationships that enhance quality of life and the emotional, social, and affective development of individuals.

It is concluded that building satisfactory family relationships requires strategic prevention and intervention processes provided by counseling, aimed at building strong social, affective, and emotional bonds that enable personal autonomy, relationships based on respect and recognition, and the responsible management of challenges arising from daily coexistence.
