Abstract

The teaching of the English language is a process that entails the development of an appropriate teaching methodology, which helps students grow their linguistic and communicative potential. The use of a virtual learning environment for a new language leads teachers to apply different strategies and resources than those normally used in a face-to-face modality.

In order to deepen and describe what type of methodology was applied in free online English course programs, a group of twenty-three teachers was observed in seasons five and eight, across different levels: morning, evening, and Saturday. The results show that the communicative approach is present in the organization of classes, content, interaction, and development of activities.

A communicative methodology allows students to be the main authors of their learning, enabling them to be more independent, inquisitive, and active in developing English language skills.
