Impact of the entry profile on the academic performance of students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program

The research was conducted in order to characterize the student of Bachelor of Nursing, thus establishing the impact of the in come profile in the academic performance; such a way, personal qualities, physical, social and attitudinal characteristics of the students were profiled.
A comparative study of current income profile for the Bachelor of Nursing was carried out, updated in the curricular evalua tion for the year 2014, with the features that the student pre sents plus his academic performance, while making a follow up activity. In a descriptive study with qualitative and quan titative variables, student characteristics as physical, social, personal and attitudinal were measured to grade this type of qualitative variables. It took into account the experience of the teacher who has already worked with such students, and un der a professional judgment issued an opinion on the matter. Through a questionnaire and by the Likert scale, the teacher evaluated the personal and attitudinal characteristics. Through a questionnaire which was addressed to a sample of students from the Bachelor of Nursing, susceptible measuring indicators were measured. Those students were followed up on their GPA between the semester II-2013 and semester I-2014 in order to verify their academic performance, relating these findings to obtain diagnostic conclusions.
Finally, the data showed an incidence of the essential charac teristics of the nature of the major of nursing in the students, and an academic performance with an average GPA of 7.67 for the odd semester 2013, and 7.2 for the even semester 2014. This means a medium quality scope in the students` learning with a CUM downward trend. These data should contribute to the administrative, teacher and student staff to raise continuous improvement processes in training human resources for nursing, with a commitment to qualify the educational processes, selec tion, and therefore the human and academic quality of students.
