Abstract

The purpose of this text is to present a literature review of the evolution of the concept of innovation over the last 50 years, understanding that organizations, as such, must respond to and evolve with the changes presented by their environment. Innovation is a determining factor for growth, fostering potential sources of competitive advantage, both at the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels of a given country. Over the years, the role of innovation in all industries, companies, regions, and nations has been fundamental to achieving high levels of competitiveness, thereby generating processes of growth and development.
