Spiritual accompaniment: A holistic approach to patient care

Spiritual support in the recovery of hospitalized patients, its influence on coping with illness, and acceptance of death is a topic of great relevance for both patients and caregivers. This qualitative, descriptive study focused on the behavior of hospitalized patients, their perception of the importance of spiritual support, and their descriptions of spiritual experiences during their hospital stay. A guided interview was used as the data collection instrument.
Spirituality is an important dimension for patients, who expressed a desire for spiritual support during their hospitalization. Furthermore, spirituality and the presence of God provide them with inner strength, tranquility, and a greater hope for life. It is important to consider that illness, as a common experience in human life, affects various aspects: physical, psychological, emotional, and social. Hence, the importance of integrating spiritual support by healthcare personnel through humanized care that promotes spiritual values in direct patient care.
