Abstract

Research on earthquakes and buildings is a crucial topic in Civil Engineering. The use of seismic isolators and energy dissipators are the most common tools for improving the resistance of structures to seismic events.
Seismic isolators are elements placed in buildings to reduce the transfer of vibrations to the structure. This protects the structure from potential damage caused by earthquake vibrations. Energy dissipators, on the other hand, aim to reduce the energy generated by the earthquake in the structure and disperse it in a controlled manner, preventing it from concentrating in one point and causing significant damage.
Both tools are of great importance in the design and construction of buildings, and their use has become increasingly common in countries with high seismic activity. Therefore, research on seismology and buildings focuses on developing strategies to minimize the effects of these events on structures, and for this reason it is vital to know the different tools that are currently available as a result of this research.
