Agribusiness in food production and sustainable livestock production through silvopastoral systems

Abstract

This study evaluates the implementation and benefits of silvopastoral systems in sustainable livestock production in the Huasteca Potosina, Veracruzana, and Tamaulipeca regions of Mexico. Interviews and surveys were conducted with thirty livestock producers to analyze the adoption of these systems, their environmental and economic benefits, and the barriers to their expansion. The results show significant improvements in soil quality, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration in the areas that adopted these systems, overcoming the negative effects of traditional livestock practices. Furthermore, silvopastoral systems increased livestock productivity and diversified income by allowing the sale of non-livestock products, such as timber and fruit. This study concludes that, although obstacles exist, the environmental and economic benefits of silvopastoral systems are clear, highlighting their potential to improve the sustainability of livestock farming in northeastern Mexico.
